Reader pulls the trigger early for April Fools’

I’ve mentioned this idea to several people over the years…none of whom I ever expected to sell the idea to the Reader. ;-)

You Can’t Eat There: Don’t fool yourself—if you live in Chicago, you’ll never get a reservation at Crib. By Mike Sula (March 27, 2008)

I guess it’s not the most unique idea, and barely even feasible if the specs on the crib’s kitchen are factual…

Can art be feminist and sexy?

‘Kingdom’ by Lisa YuskavageLisa Yuskavage’s painting emulates the soft focus, warm lighting, and the impossible combination of voluptuous and skinny beauty in the female body the same way that men’s magazines did in the 1960s and 1970s. She also directly mimics the sexist cartoons still found in the pages of Playboy. Their apple cheeked, elf-nosed, lingerie-clad blondes, brunettes, and redheads are obvious sources for her paintings.

artnet’s Jerry Saltz gets all uppity about the direction Yuskavage’s work has gone in over the last few years. He thinks her allegiance to Feminism has lapsed: Female Trouble - artnet Magazine

Jerry, I am going to address you directly here: I think Lisa knows what she’s doing. She’s moved on from the gaudy colors and in-your-face subjects to subtler critiques of the same subjects. Do you truly think her political alignment has made a polar reversal? Do you think she looks on her past work as misguided and naive? Is she embracing a woman’s role as a sex object in a male-dominated world, or is she honing her message to have an edge so sharp that you don’t feel it cut until you’re already bleeding?

The NYT (Lisa Yuskavage: Bad-Girl Painter) got it more right in 2001 than Jerry did in 2006. Roberta Smith seems to have predicted Yuskavage’s trend towards subtlety and saw no contradiction with a Feminist P.O.V. in her art, but not without one misstep:

But beneath the veneer of unity, it is equally polyglot and pieced together, and it is full of fissures and contradictions. Is the blonde in “Day” undressing for the viewer’s delectation or actually getting dressed, quietly observing the familiar terrain of her body?

Huh!? Does a woman in a Playboy or Penthouse magazine’s photo appear to be torn between taking off or putting on her clothes??? The difference is irrelevant because it is a purely mental construct that only an intellectually-hamstrung, politically-correct retard would make.

Apple has eye on autostereoscopic imaging

You never know what Apple is going to do next, so lately people have taken to sniffing out their patents to find out. Turns out they have a big improvement to video conferencing in mind (ok, it has way further impications than cool new iChat video effects)…

Great minds all over the world from acedemia to corporate R&D are wracking their brains to create the next big leap in imaging: 3-D projection that doesn’t require glasses! Oh, it can also (that is, it one day will also) interact with the viewer like a funhouse mirror and probably function pretty darn well as a video game input/output device wrapped up in one: AppleInsider | Apple researching autostereoscopic 3-D display hardware

Lilly McElroy, Antisocialist

All the big ideas in Art have been explored to death: beauty, sex, death, power, history, fear, haystacks, etc. Today’s artist has to find his or her unique niche like a ball bearing in a Pachinko game finds its niche: by falling through big cracks into little ones…Not a good analogy? This one is better: There’s a trickle of water that doesn’t want to be an anonymous thread in a raging river, so it dives into a sandy embankment until it carves a channel and becomes a small stream. That stream grows and the yearnings of anonymous globs of water sprout divergences from that one too.

The history of anything can be adequately represented by this branching river analogy (evolution, programming languages, flavors of Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream), but the added dimension of condescension barely applies until we get to the arts. Our noble (and entirely human) desire, nay!, need to cast off anonymity and “improve” on all that has come before is also an easy target of ridicule.

After taking the long way around (the leisurely elbow of the river rather than the commercial lock) I bring you to today’s featured visual and performance artist, the woman who has made antisocial behavior her life’s work for the sake of art: Lilly McElroy.

She videos and photos herself behaving in ways so desperate, cheap and obvious that your first giggle is followed by a curse. Then you realize, “It’s OK. It is funny. She’s funny. Or maybe she’s just being funny. But it’s still funny.” And that’s about as far as it goes. And how far could the confluence of run-offs from Cindy Sherman and Marcel Marceau “go” anyway?

I’m tired…but if I was going to pay $4000 a pop for a hooker this girl is pretty much what I’d expect.

Nude by GreatestdancerNude is an awesome photoset by Greatestdancer. I especially like the ones with washed-out white tones, but a huge variety of styles is represented: immaculate studio shots, experimental motion shots, and some that are amazingly intimate without being graphic.

I <3 Eliot Spitzer

Obviously Spitzer has made enemies. Powerful enemies. For them framing him could be as easy as shooting fish in a barrel. I guess he’s not denying that he patronized the escort service….kinda charming to hear about a straight sex scandal in politics these days….

So he screwed a high-class hooker. Clinton got a BJ from a fattie and survived, maybe Spitzer can do the same…? Probably not. But how stupid was it to open himself up to this?!? He knew who didn’t like him and what they were capable of doing to him, right? Maybe someone he prosecuted even introduced him to the Emperor’s Club! Did he really think he was so far above the law as to be “untouchable” like a previous Eliot? Does he see the irony?!?!

So: Is Eliot Spitzer being railroaded by a Wall Street conspiracy? by the Bush Admin? Will he resign or recover like Clinton did? Whatever way the wind winds up blowing you can’t get to the Emeror’s Club (horribly designed) website anymore. But you can see pictures of it here: Eliot Spitzer Prostitution emperors club vip escorts website pictures

We’re gonna need a bigger boat…

A huge sea reptile was dug up a couple years ago in the Arctic island chain of Svalbard. The 150 million-year-old fossilized Jurassic-era “sea monster” was found on Spitspergen. Now it have been excavated, studied and virtually reconstructed. Measuring about 50ft from nose to tail, the short-necked leviathan is a “pliosaur”.

Pliosaurs were a short-necked form of plesiosaur, a group of extinct reptiles that lived in the world’s oceans during the age of the dinosaurs…A pliosaur’s body was tear drop-shaped with two sets of powerful flippers which it used to propel itself through the water.
