Michael Bay’s live action version of my fav toy line is heading to theaters next July 4. Finally got a peek today at the updated looks of the characters in their robot modes, and other production design stuff. The robot mode designs are a radical departure from the classic TF cartoon style. The geometry of the bodies is way more complex, twisted, insect-like. I think the popularity of custom vehicles (especially custom choppers), and “tribal” style tattoos inspired the designers — or lit a fire under their butts to make the craziest looking things they could think of. Of course, I’m a fan of the blocky, anime-inspired, classic cartoon style, but if they can pull of making their crazy CG designs look real I will enjoy the movie.
Looks like the cast includes Anthony Anderson, John Voigt, and Shia LaBeouf (sp? can’t even bother to google it) which brings up a whole other challenge to possible enjoyment of this movie…
The vehicles that are their camouflage modes seem to be coinciding with some actual new model releases from GM — i.e., a yellow new Camarro that is rumored to be Bumblebee…And apparently there’s a Saleen produced cop car with a Decepticon emblem….weird! Wasn’t Prowl an Autobot cop car?
